Abstract
The present study is a cross-sectional survey conducted under the auspice of a province throughout municipal health centers in cities and counties in it. The subjects for this study were selected in proportion of population by researchers who had been trained for 2 weeks from April 29 to May 11, 2002. The selected subjects were interviewed with queries as to their health perception and status. This study was designed to examine, analyze and detect the actual situation of the inhabitants¡¯ perception and behavior of health. Thus, the survey will serve to provide basic data for the provincial government of Chungcheongnam-do to set up mid- and long-term development plans in its health and medical sector, and for health-related organizations in the area to establish systematic health policies and administrative arrangements to improve health of inhabitants. The findings of the survey can be summed up as follows: First, the subjects of the present study were 4,452, to be divided into 46.5% of males and 53.5% of females. As to their subjective perception of health in general, 6.0% regarded their health as ¡°very healthy¡±, 36.5% as ¡°fairly healthy¡±, 30.5% as ¡°normal¡±, 21.3% as ¡°not healthy¡± and 5.7% ¡°as extremely unhealthy¡±. The health perception varied greatly depending on income brackets. Old age was directly related to the perception that their health was not good. Second, 93.5% of the total subjects responded with their experience of treating chronical disease. 50.4% visited hospitals or clinics for treatment, higher than those who used health centers with 21.0%. Third, the ratio of male smokers accounted for 46.1%(41.2% by daily smokers and 4.9% by infrequent smokers) and that of female smokers was 4.1%. Among males, higher smoking ratio was found among the people from twenties to forties. 53.3% of males and 59.5% of females tried to quit smoking while younger people were found to have tried to quit smoking most seriously. Fourth, 21.6% of the surveyed practiced exercise regularly in average. Of them, 24.3% were males and 19.3% females. By age, 20- to 44-year old people were found to practice exercise most vigorously with 26.0%. It was also revealed that the richer, the more regularly people practiced exercise.
